Children who begin kindergarten behind in reading and literacy often face an uphill battle to catch up — a gap that can affect their academic success, graduation rates, college opportunities, and long-term career prospects. At BASIC, we believe early literacy is the foundation for lifelong learning.
That’s why we’ve expanded our Cradle to Graduation (C2G) initiative to include BASIC's Latino Family Literacy Project (LFLP), a proven, culturally responsive program designed to support families in Borrego Springs, where 92% of our learners come from Spanish-speaking homes.
Through ten weekly 90-minute sessions, parents and children come together to:

La investigación universitaria muestra el impacto de la LFLP
Tras un proyecto de cinco años financiado por el Departamento de Educación de EE.UU. (DOE) y en colaboración con la Universidad del Norte de Texas (UNT), el Proyecto de Alfabetización de Familias Latinas descubrió, a través de evaluaciones e investigaciones dirigidas por la universidad, que el programa beneficiaba de forma significativa y duradera a las 150 familias de estudiantes de inglés participantes. |

Book Giveaways
|
Recognizing the significance of nurturing home libraries and language-rich environments, we provide children in the Borrego Springs community with high-quality books though out the year. For many, these are the first books they have ever owned. Owning books builds a love of learning and inspires children to share stories with their siblings, parents, and friends beyond the classroom. In collaboration with the local library, each LFLP participant is registered for a library card. Additionally every child age 0-5 receives a free monthly children's book via our program affiliate, Dolly Parton Imagination Library. Every year, we take pride in distributing hundreds of books to infants, children, youth, and their families.
