Why?The Learning Academy was created after research proved that students who do not meet critical education milestones average lower pay and risk remaining in a low-income state indefinitely. The results are worse for Latinx students - nearly all learners in our program. Thus the 4-week intensive summer education program was born. |
All students will:• Improve their performance measured by pre-and post-testing and standardized tests, and 35 – 50% of our students will reach their grade equivalent on a standardized test.

Every student is provided a nutritional daily, breakfast, snack, and lunch ensuring that students are properly fueled for the learning process. Every breakfast contains eggs as research indicates that one large egg alone contains 147 milligrams of choline, an important nutrient involved in memory, mood and learning. Eggs also contain lutein, which plays an important role in brain function for infants and toddlers.

Art with OLAC, Ed & Joan White
Art is medicine is the mantra for Oak Lake Art Center (OLAC), which Ed has been the executive director of since 1992. The non-profit, educational foundation—originally called Westward Ho—was started by David Stone, an elementary school teacher interested in teaching children about the pioneer experience. After David’s death, Ed took over the foundation to help bring art into the community. Mostly helping at-risk youth, OLAC helps children discover the many ways art can inspire and heal. OLAC is also involved with the Kind Warriors project, which is a non-profit to help military veterans and retired football players who suffer from traumatic brain injuries. |

Although we would love to invite all of the students in our community, participation in the Learning Academy is by invitation only. Students are selected annually by school administrators and BASIC members based on their need and our availability. However, a waitlist is maintained as we fill spaces.
